Post Race Time

It's been 2 weeks since Race Day and the following things have happened: It snowed 12 cm; the snow melted; Occupy Montreal disbanded; the STM has announced an increase in transit fees for January; and you've survived power weight training. In a nutshell, life has gone on.

As I was going through the pictures that Santa (aka Big Jer, my future father-in-law) took, the look on many of your faces says it all. Some of you are focused on the ground, just making sure your feet are still moving. Some of you show fatigue. Some of you are glancing over to the finish line. Some of you are even smiling (although I think it's because you're talking with a friend). Some of you are hamming it up for the camera with 2 thumbs up. Regardless of what your facial expression is, your body language says it all: you survived and crossed the finish line. AND, you should be proud of yourselves.

Hopefully this experience might kickstart a few of you to trying another 5km run or participating in a charity run. Maybe some of you might even venture for a 10km or half marathon. Regardless of where you go from here, every one of you is a runner!

For your last blog, it's a two part response: 1. Give a brief (1-2 sentences) anecdote (story, summary, funny memory) of your race day, whether it be how you felt, what you accomplished, what you did afterwards, or even how you felt throughout the entire 10 weeks. 2. If I were to do this again, what would you want changed about the program so that future students can get the most out of the program? Or, what would you keep the same?

1 week left (...to all of you that want to keep running, there is a 5km Santa Shuffle Run on Mont Royal on Saturday, December 3rd for the Salvation Army....you can find more info here: http://www.events.runningroom.com/site/?raceId=7057)

  1. I'm going to start with a memory of last semester when I said I wanted to do this run program and a colleague said 'no way will the students run 5km'.

Thank you for proving them wrong. You guys rock!

  2. 1-I have a basket ball coach who didn't beleive I could do the 5km run in 35 min. All I could think about during the race is how good it would feel to see the look on his face when I made it. I finished in 30min10 sec and let's just say I emailed him 30 min after the race.

2- If the program were to be changed I would make the time increase a bit faster. Once you do the 2 extra times a week, it becomes a little easy, then again takeing a harder run program could also do the job!
BTW I do plan to run a 10 km because now I know I can do at least half of that :)

  3. 1- For race day all my friends were supporting me and wishing me good luck as they knew that I had 5 km to run. I told my boyfriend that day "I'm sorry but today my hair will be in a bun." He answered that he understood. Usually he hates the idea of me having a bun. After the race I was dead and hungry but they congratulated me and said that they would never been able to do it. It was a great feeling as I accomplished something and my surrounding were proud of me :)

2- A detail to change in the program probably would be the way of starting it. Instead of having the students choose their category without them really knowing where they situate themselves. Do a little fitness test and according to the results suggest where an individual should go in which group.

  4. 1) During the race I was just telling myself to keep running. I didn't want to walk because my goal was to run the whole five kilometers. I succeeded in doing so and it was even easier than I thought it was going to be ! I would re-do it for sure.

    2) I think that the race would have been better if we had a cause to run for, like breast cancer for example ! we could also raise money for the cause, its always fun to run for something like that because we feel like we are really accomplishing something other than grades !

    1. The entire race I kept thinking to myself "I can't believe I'm actually running a 5 K". And I was also always laughing the entire run with Kelly and Amanda

    2. For future reference I would probably take out the 5 K just because I personally hate running and it was a little cold at times, but other than that it wasn't so bad.

    1. Something unusual about the way I ran my 5km run was that I seemed to be more tired at the beginning of the run than I did at the end. Towards the end of the run, I was feeling quite energized. I may have done things backwards however that didn't stop me from enjoying every minute.

    2. I think that this course could have been improved by having a little variation each week. I believe that alternating between runs outside and indoor workouts would have been a great way to work out as effectively as possible in preparation for the run. Or to possibly have theme weeks as discussed in class today-that would also be fun.

  7. 1. I really enjoyed the fact that everyone was encouraging each other throughout the race. It really helps knowing other people are working as hard as you are and still encouraging you to continue!

    2. People will hate me for this but I would have liked to have done the 5km run at the beginning of the semester. We could see our improvement and I think it would have been very motivating for us to continue running after the semester is over.

I must add that the whole semester I have been motivated to come to every class and run the whole program for one thing you said the first class of the semester. You asked: 'Who hates running here?' I was the first one to raise my hand. Your answer: 'This class is for you! I will make you enjoy running!' This has really been my motivation throughout the semester (trying to enjoy running!)

  8. 1. The whole race i just kept reminding myself how much i had left to run, That really motivated me to keep going. After the race i was really tired and sore, but i felt like i ahd accomplished something i never would have done if i was not in this class.

    2. I think it is really good how each week in this program we slowly increase our running time. I think this really helps to prepare for the run.

  9. 1. At the beginning of the race the first km I started have and I wanted to stop but I had already started and I just start run faster to finish the 5km more quicker.

    2. I think it is very good for that we start a program slowly and to be finilly ready for the 5km at the end.

  10. 1. During almost the whole race I felt not so bad but for the last 200 meters, I gave all I had and that killed me. Afterward, I wasn't feeling that good because I didn't eat appropriate food that day in order to give the effort I gave.

    2. Something to change would be my motivation at the begining of the program that good.

  11. 1. Basically as soon as I passed the soccer felt I started feeling cold and thought I was going to die because I couldn't feel my upper body. 20 minutes towards the run I started to get into it, and about 10 minutes later my whole body was sweaty and warm, which I knew then I was going to be fine. I feel like I've accomplished something I didn't think I could do. I am very proud of myself for finishing the race.

    2. More motivation I guess, try to tell everyone to run with a partner that is at their running level. Towards the end of the race I ran with a friend and that really helped me out.

  12. part 1:

In my objective for the 5kim run I wrote that I wouldn't take any break within the whole 5km, but I did therefore for the next semester if I have the chance again being your students I would love to do it this time without taking any pause. In a whole I was proud that I at least finished it because when I started the run I was discouraged for the long run that i would do, but the fact that I finshed it I was very proud.

    Part 2:

Actually if I were to do this again I would not change anything but just add more quad exercises because for the run we need. I would keep the yoga courses because it does an efficient job helping our body relax.

  13. The 5Km went pretty well even though i was tired at the end. I was glad i finish it because at the beginning of the semester it seem impossible.

The class is perfect the way it is no need to change anything.

  14. In the beginning of the 5 KM, I was really motivated and ready to run. I gave all what I could, it was a really great fun for me. I realised that I did great the whole time, and I was feeling really proud of myself.

There is nothing to change really, it had all the explications needed and everything was pretty clear. You even give us deserts in the end, nothing to change. It was perfectly planned.

  15. 1. The race went really good! Halfway I start being really tired so I had to slow down, but otherwise I gave my best. It felt so good , when I crossed the finish line... AMAZING!

    2. I don;t think taht I will actually change something. I like the way it was designed, because it way doable, and at the same time challenging, which I really liked!

  16. There isn't really much to say about my run other than my shoes needed tying half way through. Besides that I just focused on the run, finished it, then went home.

I wouldn't really change anything about the program, as long as the people in it are willing to put some actually effort into it there should be no problems.

  17. I remember the race as if it were yesterday lol. I was happy the race finally came because the anticipation was secretly killing me! Wondering if I was actually going to finish or not, but I was happy I did, and with the company Toni:) I enjoyed it the more.

The program is organized well, if you practice running and preparing yourself for the big day, it was a breeze, but just a tiny little thing I would change is running in partners of 2; one "the motivater" and the other "the unmotivated" lol.

    Cheers!

  18. 1) On the 5km day, I was confident about performing under 25 minutes. After half of the run, I was exhausted because I had started too fast. But as I got close to the finish line, I felt a boost of energy which helped me to reach my goal. I am really happy with my 24 minutes run :)

    2) I suggest that for the next semester, you should start this class with a fitness test in order to classify students into different categories. It would force students to give their 100% in every class. In results, they would probably perform better in the 5km run.

  19. 1) I really enjoyed the race...As a matter of fact, I was surprised I finished the it in 30 minute on the clock...I was expecting somewhere between 35-40. Everything was great during the race day except the weather...It was a bit cold for me and my jaws start to hurt when the wind gets harsh

    2) I think we can spend more time talking about nutrition since it plays a big role in our fitness. :-)

  20. Part 1:
Even though I knew I was going to run a five km that day, during activity block I ate a lot of food( A LOT!). So when the time came for me to run my 5 km, I was wondering how I was going to finish it. I was pretty much questionning myself if I was going to give up. I felt like puking, and I still continued. I am glad I finished this 5K!

    Part 2:
I think that a better motivation would have helped the students more. Running with someone that has the same capacity can really help. Maybe, since the very beginning of the semester, match up people that are really similar or something.

  21. 1) The night before the run I took the time (even if I did not really have the time) to made a new playlist on my ipod specially for the 5K. The morning of the 5K, I was so proud of myself because I did not forget my ipod at home. (which is typical to me)......But just before the run, when I was waiting outside at the start line, I realised that I left it in my locker -.- However, the 5K without music was not that bad !!

2)I would not change anything about the program!! Very nice class and teacher (:

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1 The night before the run I wanted to add music on my Ipod because I have slow music so I wanted something that can keep me running and me and technology isn't working so I kept my slow songs, my running was boring for that however I had fun running my first 5km!!

    2. I wouldn't change anything! Our class was amazing and the teacher also. !! :)

  23. 1. The only thing I remember of my race day is that I was really disappointed. I train all the semester to do this race successfully and I couldn't do it because of my ankle.

    2. The program was very well-organized and the teacher should always remain so dynamic with future students! It helps and it is rewarding.

  24. 1. During the run I was both suprised and disappointed. I was suprised because during the first lap I ran non-stop for almost eight minutes when I was planning to run for five minutes. I was also disappointed because after that first lap I couldn't maintain that same time.

2.I wouldn't change anything in the program. I think that if a student had a good breakfast and a good sleep, they would feel more motivated.

  25. 1. I felt awesome after the 5k marathon, albeit rather overheated. It was the first marathon I ever completed and I managed to last till the end. After the run, I went to badminton practice and wept inside during our intense two our training regime. Despite the physical torture I put myself through that day, I managed to have the best sleep I've had in a long while.

    2. I thought the program was well thought out. I could see improvements in my fitness level every week. I would however incorporate more muscular endurance training throughout the semester. It would make it a lot easier to run if my legs muscles didn't tire so easily.

1- my best memory about the 5km is when I reach the end. The feeling that you have done everything to accomplish your goal is very amazing.

2- to improve students motivation, I think that theory class should be teach in class and not in the gym. Without chairs is defficult to give 100% of attention. However, in general it is been a good class ! thanks!

  27. 1- What i liked the much about the run is that i finished second and I felt very proud of me

1, I was sick on race day actually, so that hindered my performance. When I finished the race, my heart was hurting...

2, If I were to ever do this again, I would try my best not to fall sick and I would bring myself a water bottle.

  29. During the race I thought that I would never make it even though I loved it. At the end of the race I was so happy because I finished it and surprised myself.

What I would really like to change would be the time the race started. I would appreciate it if it was later in the morning rather than 8 am.

  30. - While training I thought that running 5Km won't be that difficult because I did not know how long it really was but at the race day, when I saw the distance we needed to run I realized that 5Km is actually really long! However that didn't stop me from finishing the race.

    - Doing a little of yoga at the end of each class to relax.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1: During our training for the 5Km run, I always thought the distance we ran was approximately 5Km, but when we were shown the actual distance it was intimidating but pushing through it wasn't bad at all! I even turned back several times to stick with a friend :)

2: The preparation was great, I think I would have liked a little more focus on stretching at the end, maybe a little more yoga more frequently?

  32. 1- I never thought i could do a 5km run. Although i thought i would be able to run more then i did, i am still proud i tried my best. Now i know for sure i don't really enjoy running!

2- I think that running for a bit every class is a great idea. The only thing i might modify is to make the preparation runs longer, because the race was a lot longer then what we did in class.

  33. 1)I remember running for 8-9 minutes straight at the beginning of the race. After that, I was struggling to maintain the same amount of time for my run/walk technique. However, this didn’t prevent me of crossing the finish line at a satisfying time. I felt pretty tired, but proud of my accomplishment.
The race would’ve been even more enjoyable if I had my Ipod with me, providing me with some entertainment throughout the run.

    2. I thought that the 5km program was well thought out. Every week, the “running” intervals increased progressively, assuring a definite improvement by the end of the semester. One of the things I would change would be the time of race day. Especially in November, the weather is starting to get colder. Perhaps a better alternative would be to put the race during activity block, since it starts to get warmer in the afternoon.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1.At the beginning of the race I wasn’t really sure if I was actually going to finish, however I tried to keep positive and when the race was actually completed it felt amazing because I knew I had completed a really hard task, since I don’t really like running.

2.The one thing I would change would probably be to have more variation during each class. I would have liked to work inside a bit and outside. However what I found really good was that running outside gave us more courage since the race was done outside. I find the teacher and our friends really kept everyone motivated so that was great.

  35. 1. The run was pretty fun ! It was the day of my birthday so while I was running, I was just thinking of all the presents I would have that day and the cake my mom would make me. Finishing my 5 K with a good time just made my birthday so much worthwhile !
    2. Overall I think the program was well thought. I would keep it in the same way except I would maybe add more stretching at the end !

  36. 1. The night before the 5km, I hurt myself really bad at my cheerleading practice... So I did not do the run but I WAS THERE the day of the run to cheer for the couragous people running!!
    2. Overall, the running program was great! It is sure that each year, people will complain but il helped a lot of people to fix goals and have a little bit of challenge ... And this is awesome!

  37. 1) Every day since the beginning of the semester i have put bread in the toaster so i could get that extra 5 min of sleep (its a psychological thing). On the morning of the run i lost that five minutes and got up earlier to prepare a better breakfast which was fruitsalad. Needless to say, for the first time i did not get any cramps while running.
    2) Overall the running program i find is pretty good although i would have at least one running program that could increase faster and got to 20 minutes of full out running by the X number of weeks we have.

  41. 1. I believe I did very good because I did accomplish what I wanted. It was to finish the 5km without walking or anything. It was hard but i am very proud to say that I did finish it.
    2. I think that the running program is good because it allows students to stay in shape. It also allows students to run the 5km which they never thought they would do such as myself.

  42. 1. Before the race, I was wondering... what if I wasn't able to finish the 5km? I mean, I don't do it on purpose, but I usually think negatively before any event. I usually run crazy and outrageous scenarios through my mind and try to sort out which one is more likely to happen. I don't get scared, I don't get surprised... I just find it oddly interesting to think negatively. Maybe I simply want to prove myself wrong at the end of the race or maybe I've got a few screws loose in the head.

    2. The running program is great, I love it. KEEP THE SNACKS AND NEVER LET THEM GO. Seriously, the snacks were the best part of the race, because I'm a pig and I eat anything I can. The whole course was fun and always well organized. We were never lost and we always knew what to do! :)

  45. 1. before the race day i was literally hoping that it would rain so that we wouldn't have to do it. and to be honest even on the day i felt like i wasn't going to make it to the end, but after starting it was just to late to give up. i was extremely motivated by the 1km, 2km etc. markers & the KICK ASPHALT sign had me cracking up.
if i could do it all over again, i would definitely do more training outside of class. & i don't think there is ANYTHING that needs to change. :)

  47. 1 - I remember running up the hill and seeing the sign that says "My mascara runs faster than you" and laughing for the rest of the race waiting to see it again.
2 - Because of the running program, I actually enjoy running now. I think that the only way students will put the effort into running would be if they trained for an x number of weeks (like we followed with Flo-Jo for example) and then time themselves to see how fast they can run 1 km, 2 km, etc.

  48. 1- I was trying to keep up with my partner for the 5k run. I really wanted to stop at some point to take like 1 minute of walking. However, I was too proud to ask her to stop so we ran the entire 5k without stopping.
2- I would make the training program harder at the beginning. I found that running for 15 minutes and walking sometime is not challenging enough.
